Summer Crafts: Create A Building

Posted by on Aug 11, 2012 in Family Fun | Leave A Comment

This is something my kids enjoyed doing and I wish I had some pictures of their creations. I was in between cameras at the time – lol.

Create all kinds of houses and building with things you already have in your home. Start by collecting small cardboard boxes such as cereal, pasta and spagetti boxes.

Stuff them with newspaper until they’re sturdy.

Tape the boxes together with pacing or masking tape to form whatever shape you want.

Cut 1″ x 6″ strips of newspaper.

Create a decoupage mixture with equal parts white glue (like Elmers) and water. Dip the newspaper strips into the mixture and cover the boxes with them. Alternate the direction of the strips.

Let it completely dry. This might take several hours or overnight, depending on the size of the boxes and the weather.

Once it’s dry, paint it with acrylic or tempera paints. Add details with just about anything. You can use things you find in nature such as pebbles and twigs. Use game pieces, toothpicks, small craft items – just about anything you have laying around or in your craft box.

Please share your photos of this craft with us! We’ll share it on pinterest. 🙂

Summer Water Games For Kids

Posted by on Aug 5, 2012 in Family Fun | 12 comments

Celebrate summer with these fun water games your kids will love!! You probably already have all the items you need so what are you waiting for? 🙂

1. Water Balloon Relay

Fill balloons with water – two for each child. Divide them equally into two buckets. Have the kids line up away from the buckets and on your word, the first player from each team runs to their bucket, puts a balloon on the floor and bounces on it until it bursts. Then they run back to their team and tags the next player. The team that pops all their balloons first is the winning team.

2. Ice Action

Fill an ice cube tray and put it in the freezer long enough to form a thin crust of ice at the top, maybe about 20-25 minutes. Poke small action figures into the ice and put them back in the freezer until the ice is solid. Now it’s race time!! Bring them outside and use a slide or smooth board to race them.

3. Ice Pick Up

Put a bag of ice cubes in kiddie pool and give each player a bowl. In the word “Go”, each player uses their feet to take out the ice cubes and transfer them to their bowl. Who ever gets the most ice cubes in their bowl in five minutes is the winner. If the ice melts in the bowl, measure water to determine the winner.
