One of the best ways for kids to learn how particular insects and spiders behave is to observe them up close. The challenge is to replicate the bugs habitat with the appropriate temperature, light, and moisture levels. Try this easy craft and have a <a href="http://summerandkids.com/nature-camp-in-your-own-backyard/"title="" >nature camp in your own back yard!

Cut off the upper third of a 2- liter clear plastic soda bottle. Fill the bottom with a little dirt or sand. Then create a hiding place using some vegetation, a crumpled piece of paper towel, or a paper cup. Next, wrap a piece of nylon stocking or cheesecloth around the spout of the bottle top and secure it with a rubber band. Once you’ve got your new tenants inside, simply invert the bottle top and insert it into the bottle bottom.

Before your guests move in make sure you;

1. Spend some time observing them in their natural environment so you’ll know how to best provide for them. If you can’t identify a bug consult a guide or a web site so you’ll know if it’s safe to catch.

2. Provide water buying lightly misting the interior of the container or by placing a bit of clean damp sponge inside.

3. Don’t forget food! Plant eaters are easier to satisfy since you’ll often find them on or near their preferred food. Predators will require you to capture prey. Either way, or for a fresh supply daily and to remove any food that hasn’t been seen.

4. Keep your insect apartment out of the direct sunlight or your bug may overheat and die. Plan on releasing them within a day or two and place them back in the same spot you found them you can then look for new residents.

Summer’s here and it is really time for some fun! Who does not like playing in the hot sun and getting a tan in the process? If you live in a sunny state, then you must be quite lucky because you would be able to get some sunshine. I know of some places that are dark and gloomy like London and the sun is pretty hard to come by. So hopefully from where you are reading this article, you are looking at some pretty good sunshine now!

Well anyways, the best kind of summer is spent with the family. If you are married and you have got some kids, my congratulations to you and hope that your summer would be filled with fantastic activities. Life can be so monotonous and boring without kids and once you have got them, how can you ever live without them! I know my kids regularly pester me to buy them some toys and this summer I understand there are some cool new toys to look at. If the toy maker is smart, they would be putting out toys which can be played in the pool because that is where most families and kids would be hanging out this summer. So what are some of these interesting toys?

First up would be the toy water guns. Gone are the days when the toy guns were simple contraptions which squirts little amounts of water out for fun. These days these toy guns have got bigger and meaner. Ever seen the range of Super Soaker toy water guns? Those toys are really for the big guys. Not to mention the power of the water blast can be overwhelming. Don’t try playing with these toys at home on dry land because everything is going to be wet!

If you want less violent toys to play with this summer, maybe you should check out the Little Tikes Ultimate Beach Ball Sprinkler. This baby is the perfect toy for the scorching summer sun. The toy is in fact a giant beach ball with many sprinklers or in layman terms holes sporting the outer layer of the ball.
To really have some great fun you only need to connect a hose to this over sized, colorful beach ball sprinkler, and bingo! What you have now is a new wet and wild summer water playground for your kids! The benefits of having water is that kids just love to play with water and getting wet and also splashing each other! That is why you should get this cool Beach Ball Sprinker.

These are just some of the many toys that I would recommend you to buy this summer. If you are interested to buy more cheap toys online, do check out my website.

If you are looking for ways to have some fun with your kids this summer, consider adding a trampoline to your backyard. The apparatus, which has been providing hours of fun to children of all ages for years and years, is the perfect addition to your outdoor space and not only provides a fun place for the kids to play with their friends, but can also provide loads of family time as well. As an added bonus, you’ll all be getting some heart healthy exercise while jumping away!

There are many types of trampolines to choose from for your backyard. If you don’t have tons of space, but still want enough room to be able to jump, an 8ft trampoline is a good choice. This model is large enough for people to jump on without getting hurt but is not so big that it takes up your entire backyard, leaving room for no other amenities. The only thing to consider about a trampoline that is only 8ft in diameter is that it is best to keep the number of jumpers to one or two at a time so no one falls off or gets hurt.

Of course, you can get trampolines in a variety of other sizes as well, depending on your needs, the size of your backyard and your budget. Larger styles will allow multiple jumpers at the same time but will of course take up more room in your yard. They will also be more expensive to purchase. Small models are okay, as long as you take the necessary precautions to keep jumpers safe within the confines of the jumping surface.

When it comes to safety, no matter what size you decide on for a trampoline, a good investment is to get an enclosure that goes around the edge of the apparatus. This keeps jumpers safely inside and prevents them from falling over the edge and onto the ground. Some models come with this safety feature included as part of the package you buy and with others you may need to buy it separately. However you have to get it, it is a very worthwhile investment in your family’s safety.

Having a trampoline is a great way to get the kids moving all summer long and may even inspire you to get out and get moving as well! It can be a source of fun for the whole family all summer long.

We all want to have fun in the summer but staying healthy is especially important when you’re out in the sun.

Sunburn results when the amount of exposure to the sun or other ultraviolet light source exceeds the ability of the body’s protective pigment, melanin, to protect the skin. Sunburn in a very light-skinned person may occur in less than 15 minutes of midday sun exposure, while a dark-skinned person may tolerate the same exposure for hours.

Sunburn is better prevented than treated. Effective sunscreens are available in a wide variety of strengths. Most doctors recommend a sunscreen SPF level of 30 or greater.

Sunscreen should be generously applied. If out in the sun for a prolonged period of time during the day, wearing a hat and other protective clothing is recommended. Light clothing reflects the sun most effectively.

If you do get a sunburn:
* Try taking a cool shower or bath or placing wet, cold wash rags on the burn.
* Avoid products that contain benzocaine, lidocaine, or petroleum (like Vaseline).
* If blisters are present, dry bandages may help prevent infection.
* If your skin is not blistering, moisturizing cream may be applied to relieve discomfort.
* Over the counter medications, like ibuprofen, may help to relieve pain from sunburn. (Aspirin should be avoided in children who are running a fever.)

Call your doctor if you have a fever with the sunburn or if fluid-filled blisters, dizziness, or vision problems occur with it.

Keep in mind….
* Children and babies are more sensitive to the sun and are more likely than others to get a sunburn.
* Your risk of a burn increases when you’re near things that reflect the sun, including snow, water or sand.
* The harmful rays of the sun are strongest and most dangerous between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
* Certain medications, including antibiotics, can make your skin more sensitive to the sun.

Swimming is more than a great way to cool off when it’s hot, it’s also a fun activity that helps you work out your whole body. If you don’t know how to swim, or you want to brush up your skills, you’ll want to take some lessons at your local pool. There, you’ll master the basics to help keep your head above water.

Floating. Our bodies have a natural tendency to float — so go with it! Relax and let the water support your body. Lie back with your arms stretched out to the side. Turn your palms up and keep the backs of your hands in the water. Arch your back, stretch out your legs (some gentle kicking will help you float easier), and take short breaths to stay relaxed. Floating is a great way to rest, or rest while you call for help if you don’t have enough energy to swim to shore or the side of a pool.

Treading water. Another way to keep afloat is to tread water. Get into the water and pretend you are gently riding a bicycle, with your back straight and your arms straight out in front of you. Sweep your arms together with your palms facing down and in. Then, sweep them back out with your palms facing down and away from each other.

Now that you know how to keep your head above the water, try swimming with your head below water!

Swimming underwater. Breathe in as much air as you can and then let it all out, take one more breath and hold it, and slide under the water. (Even though it seems like taking lots of quick breaths before going underwater could help you, doing that is called “hyperventilating” and it can actually make you pass out underwater. Not good!) Stretch out your body with your legs together and your arms straight out a little bit above your head. Pull your legs up then kick them apart to start gliding. Next, bring your legs together and kick in a scissor motion to move around. While you kick, put your arms out to your sides and push them back towards your legs. Glide as far as you can, and then come back up when you need a breath. Try to stay relaxed and don’t push yourself too far. The more you practice, the stronger your lungs will become.

Once you’ve got the basics, to be a strong swimmer and enjoy lots of water activities, you’ll need to learn these strokes: backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle, and butterfly — to name a few!

Being Safe:

Learn to swim and always swim with a friend. It’s more fun and having a friend there if you need one is just plain smart!

Make sure to respect rules and lifeguards. Pool rules like “no running” or beach rules like “no swimming outside the flags” are there to protect you. (And lifeguards enforce them so that you can stay safe, not to ruin your fun.) Make sure a lifeguard or an adult can see you just in case you need help.

Don’t try to keep up with stronger or more experienced swimmers, especially if they swim out further than you think you can swim back.

Swimming is real workout! So, take breaks. If you get tired while you’re in the water, float on your back for a few minutes until you get your power back!

Make sure to keep an eye on mother nature. If you spot bad weather (dark clouds, lightening), it’s time to take the fun inside.

And when you get out of the water, tilt and shake your head to let all of the water drain out of your ears — “swimmers ear” can be a real pain!

Diving makes a splash, but make sure you know how deep the water is before you leap.

Fun Facts:

The Law of Gravity explains that what goes up must come down. When you’re in the water, the higher you try to lift your head, the more gravity will try to push you down. So, if you want to float, try to keep yourself underwater and you will naturally float at the surface. But if you lift your head, arms, or legs out of the water, you’ll sink right back down.

Play A Game:

Got two T-shirts, some friends, and time at the pool? Then you’re ready to play! Divide into two teams and have half of each team line up on opposite sides of the pool. When you’re ready to go, the first player on each team puts on the wet T-shirt and jumps into the pool. (No running to jump in!) The players swim across to the other side as fast as they can and tag the next person in their team’s line. Then they take off the wet T-shirt and give it to their teammate to put on. As soon as it’s on, the next swimmer can jump in and go. The first team to have all of its swimmers finish the relay wins!

National Get Outdoors Day is a new annual event to encourage healthy, active outdoor fun. Participating partners will offer opportunities for American families to experience traditional and non-traditional types of outdoor activities.

The pilot effort of National Get Outdoors Day was launched on June 14, 2008. Building on the success of More Kids in the Woods and other important efforts to connect Americans – and especially children – with nature and active lifestyles, the USDA Forest Service (FS) and the American Recreation Coalition (ARC) agreed to lead an inclusive, nationwide effort focusing on a single day when people would be inspired and motivated to get outdoors. GO Day partnered with federal, state and local agencies, key enthusiast organizations and recreation businesses to create a healthy, fun day of outdoor adventure aimed at reaching first-time visitors to public lands and reconnecting children to the outdoors. Last year, over 50 official GO Day sites across the nation from Anacostia Park in Washington, D.C. to the Big Bear Discovery Center in the San Bernardino National Forest welcomed thousands of new faces to the joy and benefits of the great outdoors.
