Make Colored Sidewalk Chalk

May 26, 2008 - 2:11 am Leave A Comment

First find a mold for your sidewalk chalk. Anything from a toilet tissue roll or small paper cup to fancy candy molds will work. Mix together 1 cup of Plaster of Paris with 1 cup of water. Add color to your mixture using powdered tempera paint. Experiment with making swirled colors by adding the paint and stirring very little. Blend well and let stand for a few minutes. Pour your mixture into the molds you chose. Set aside and let dry completely. Drying time can take from several hours to a few days depending on the size of the mold you chose. Once dry you can remove your chalk from the mold. Set it aside to dry for approximately 24 hours more. Take your chalk outside and create fun masterpieces!

Making a Rock Garden

April 23, 2008 - 1:18 am Leave A Comment

Your kids will love this creative summer craft!
Start keeping an eye out for rocks of all shapes and sizes, watching for flat, smooth stones. Look for rocks that can be turned into animals, flowers, dragons or fairies. Clean the stones in warm, soapy water and let dry. Use a pencil to sketch out your design on the surface of the rock. It can be an animal, insect, flower or anything else that you desire. To make this craft easier for young kids, use black paint or marker to create an outline of the design.

Then, once it’s dry, they can fill in the outlined areas. Arrange an assortment of water tempera paints and paint brushes and have fun painting. Wiggly eyes, buttons and other embellishments can be added to your design. Use the creations throughout your garden or household plants.
