National Get Outdoors Day: June 13, 2009

April 29, 2009 - 2:25 am Leave A Comment

National Get Outdoors Day is a new annual event to encourage healthy, active outdoor fun. Participating partners will offer opportunities for American families to experience traditional and non-traditional types of outdoor activities.

The pilot effort of National Get Outdoors Day was launched on June 14, 2008. Building on the success of More Kids in the Woods and other important efforts to connect Americans – and especially children – with nature and active lifestyles, the USDA Forest Service (FS) and the American Recreation Coalition (ARC) agreed to lead an inclusive, nationwide effort focusing on a single day when people would be inspired and motivated to get outdoors. GO Day partnered with federal, state and local agencies, key enthusiast organizations and recreation businesses to create a healthy, fun day of outdoor adventure aimed at reaching first-time visitors to public lands and reconnecting children to the outdoors. Last year, over 50 official GO Day sites across the nation from Anacostia Park in Washington, D.C. to the Big Bear Discovery Center in the San Bernardino National Forest welcomed thousands of new faces to the joy and benefits of the great outdoors.

What Our Summer Looked Like This Year

As summer 2008 wraps up, here are some of our favorite things we enjoyed this season. :)

Having breakfast outside in the screen room. We had friends over that day so it made it even better.

Flowers in my favorite pot. It was left behind by the previous owners and I just fell in love with it.

Checking out the snails. Aren’t they cute?

How To Play Hopscotch

Hopscotch is a great, classic game that can be enjoyed with friends—the more the merrier! You get to jump around, throw things, and just enjoy being outside in the beautiful summer weather.

Draw a hopscotch pattern, like the one in the photo above on the ground with chalk or use masking tape on a floor and number each square in order. Give each player has a marker such as a stone, shell, etc.

Stand at the beginning and toss your marker in the first square. Hop over square 1 (you must skip any square that has a marker in it) to square 2. Hop through the grid on one foot unless there are two squares side-by-side, then you jump landing with one foot in each square. Hop to the end, jump and turn around 180° without leaving the grid, and hop back. Pause in square 2 to pick up the marker, and out. Toss the marker in square 2, hop through the same way, then square 3 and so on.

Have fun!! :)
